The Language of Heaven
Part One
Marilyn M. Campbell
"Could those whose hearts are filled with hatred of God, of truth and holiness, mingle with the heavenly throng and join their songs of praise? . . . No, no. . . they have never trained the mind to love purity; they have never learned the language of heaven, and now it is too late" (GC 542-3).
Light On the Dark Side of God contains all the elements of the gospel and the life of faith, as I presently understand them. But due to the need to focus on the main theme, many topics could receive only casual mention. My hope has been that I could someday develop some of these important gospel themes, such as "the language of heaven," a prominent, vital subject of the inspired word.
In Light On the Dark Side of God, this theme appears in several places. Page 106 says, "Read His word and give Him your words every morning. Never leave your prayer closet without humbly insisting in Jesus' name that He come with you and be Captain of your day. Pour out everything that is in your heart at that moment. Never forget to praise." And so on.
Some say, playfully, that Spanish is the language of heaven. While I concede the melodic Spanish sound, I don't believe Spirit of Prophecy means "dialect" when speaking of the language of heaven.
Rather, it has to do with the expression--the presentation--of the inner person. When babies come into the world have you noticed how much excitement and joy surrounds their language development? When baby learns new words, the parent can't wait for a "show and tell" opportunity. "Dada", "Mama". These are "baby-book moments". But in learning language, in teaching it to our children, we have sought mere word communication and have not seen the potential God intends for us in deeper aspects of this wonderful gift of language.
We have given a nod of the head to sanctified speech. We know that when we become Christians some things change in our mode of expression. Yet we have failed to utilize the power God has given us in our voice-making apparatus. How did God create the world? With His word. Were we created in His image? Could that include the ability to create with words? to create (or perhaps facilitate) righteousness? I believe so. We'll see that this idea finds support in the Bible, Spirit of Prophecy, the writings of A. T. Jones and E. J. Waggoner, and in the world of modern science. This is the true "language of heaven" which is the subject of this series.
(As with the theme of Light On the Dark Side of God, I ask your indulgence until the subject is fully presented. Don't assume you know where it's going until it's done.)
Gospel Paradigms:
Learning the language of heaven begins with our understanding of what constitutes the gospel. Whether we realize it or not, we have a paradigm (or a picture) in our minds of how God saves. A paradigm is a model, like a model airplane or an architectural mode. When we see the model, we don't have to wait until the final product appears to conceptualize how it will look.
A gospel model is similar. Within Adventism there are three major models of the gospel--how God saves humans. I cannot express too strongly that this fact has created an enormous amount of disorder and confusion among us. Many see the disorder and confusion but cannot pinpoint its source in the fact that different pictures of the gospel exist in our heads. When we hear sermons, when we read printed articles, when we communicate among ourselves regarding eternal things, we automatically fit them into our gospel model. And sometimes they don't seem to fit. We can come away confused. Or we can come away thinking we understand--but not understanding at all, because the speaker or writer was working in a paradigm different from our own. We cannot understand a lot of what is taking place among us today without examining our own model and understanding that others may have a different paradigm in their minds.
Importantly, "new light" cannot be accurately assessed without a correct gospel model in mind.
Here, briefly, are the three main views of the gospel that exist among us, and you will note the principal difference lies in how each views the sin issue. (Keep in mind these models exist among many Christian communities, not just Adventism.)
Which model is in your head?:
1. Historical:
Full victory over sin is expected and required. Sins are overcome by first acknowledging them. Then effort is put forth to overcome them, one by one. Humans do all they can, but if the work becomes too difficult, the Holy Spirit, representing Christ, will come to one's aid and bring the victory. This view emphasizes the ten commandments, the Sabbath, health reform, paying tithe, witnessing and represents the general character of Adventism through most of its history.
2. The New View:
Adventists who have taken their religion seriously and attempted the above have generally had one of two reactions to the exercise. They have either believed they were achieving success with their efforts and complacently carried on (giving the world reason to accuse us of legalism), or they have given up in defeat, amazed at their inability to overcome sin. The fact is, sin cannot be overcome in the historical way. Many bruised souls who have tried can attest it doesn't work.
Those who have tried this approach and failed have struggled to understand their continual defeat. Christians cannot ignore the issue of sin in their lives; they have to do something with it. Thus since the late 1950s the evangelical view, that Christ paid sin's price for us on Calvary and now there is nothing more to do, has made great gains within our borders. The problem with this view is that, while wrong, it is just close enough to right to be dangerous. It is, in fact, as near right as the historical view--and just as wrong. In fact, it is far enough off to cause the loss of the souls of those who receive it.
The new view says that beyond the cross, the issue of sin, for Christians, is resolved. Christ carried our sins with Him to Calvary, which He surely did. Therefore, beyond the time of the cross, 30 or so A.D., no Christian need get too upright about sin. Simply professing Christ, observing Christian ritual and doing one's best suffices to save.
What is wrong with this paradigm? Remember the sanctuary--the gospel portrayed in the wilderness? What represented the cross? the altar of burnt offering, right? This stood outside the entrance to the tent itself. But a world of activity took place beyond the altar of burnt offering. The priests took the sins into the sanctuary to have them resolved.
The new view resigns itself to co-exist with sin and deprives God's worshipers of victory over it in this life. "Righteousness" is a bookkeeping entry in heaven's ledgers, granting humans credit for the righteousness of Christ because they have professed Christianity. Conscientious souls, longing for relief from a besetting sin, are offered little hope. Truly, the theological pendulum swung far in an opposite direction.
3. Righteousness By Faith:
I can say the above models are incorrect on the basis of the inspired word. A growing number of Adventists are aware that in 1888 God sent a special message to the church through Elders A. T. Jones and E. J. Waggoner. Ellen White said their message was true, that it was the beginning of the latter rain. Some say it was accepted. Some say it was rejected. But if it was accepted, then we have been in the time of the latter rain since 1888. To me, that does not compute.
The message they brought explained how humans acquire the righteousness that will meet the demands of the judgment. Righteousness, by definition, is the absence of sin. Jones and Waggoner brought a completely new model (paradigm) to the church, showing that sinless living was clearly possible (without reliance on a mere bookkeeping entry), no credit to human works at all. ("Sabbath" (rest) is the ultimate symbol of living by faith.) Many in positions of influence at the time did not like the challenge to their old historical model and set their backs against it, declaring: "Stand by the old landmarks!" Thus sincere, misguided men fought to protect "truth", when God was working to bring in better light. What, then, was the model these men presented, which Ellen White also called the Laodicean message?
Simply stated, they said humans must open the heart to the Holy Spirit. He would come in, representing Christ, and He, as a living power, would take over the reins of the life. Christ (through the Holy Spirit) never comes in uninvited. But once invited, He brings in the perfect human history of Christ. He brings Christ's wisdom and right-doing into the present moment. Thus human decision-making and character reflect the One living within. When God looks at the human, He sees Christ--real, influential, but invisible to human eyes--and credits the human with the perfection and the righteousness of Christ, invisible His companion.
All the human work in this arrangement is "knee-work," seeking powerful bonds between the soul and Christ, as the Holy Spirit represents Him in human lives. Prayer and surrender of the will enable the Holy Spirit to take over and sanctify the life, for never will the Holy Spirit compromise human free agency.
Imputed Righteousness:
The crediting (or imputing) of righteousness takes place once those bonds of union are forged: "When this intimacy of connection and communion is formed, our sins are laid upon Christ; His righteousness is imputed to us" (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 229) emphasis supplied). Therefore, while imputed (or gifted) righteousness certainly exists in the gospel, it does not take place outside the believer's experience. And credited righteousness does not occur until the bond with Christ is final. Jones' and Waggoner's paradigm entails intimacy between the believer and Christ (as the Holy Spirit represents Him in the human life). Then the righteousness, the actions, words and attitude manifesting from the human actually flow from Christ within. This picture constitutes the heart and soul of the message Jones and Waggoner brought.
(If you have not studied the actual Jones/Waggoner message, a workbook is available from CHJ Publishing $6.95 plus $3 s/h).
The obvious questions, then, are how is this bond formed? how is it maintained? Words are the bonds in any close relationship. Where we find a good human relationship of any sort, the right words have invariably created it. Could words have anything to do with bringing about this bonding between humanity and divinity? This brings us to our subject, "The Language of Heaven," which will continue next issue.

The Great Controversy
(Part 2)
by Jack Carpenter
"All the paternal love which has come down from generation to generation through the channel of human hearts, all the springs of tenderness which have opened in the souls of men, are but as a tiny rill to the boundless ocean when compared with the infinite, exhaustless love of God. Tongue cannot utter it, pen cannot portray it. You may meditate upon it every day of your life. You may search the scriptures diligently in order to understand it. You may summon every power and capability that God has given you, in the endeavor to comprehend the love and compassion of the Heavenly Father, and yet there is an infinity beyond. You may study that love for ages; you can never fully comprehend the length and the breadth, the depth and the height, of the love of God in giving His Son to die for the world. Eternity itself can never fully reveal it. Yet as we study the Bible, and meditate upon the life of Christ and the plan of redemption, these great themes will open to our understanding more and more. And it will be ours to realize the blessing which Paul desired for the Ephesian church when he prayed 'that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of Glory, may give unto you the Spirit of Wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him; the eyes of your understanding being enlightened, that ye may know what is the hope of His calling, and what the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power to usward who believe'" (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 740).
Jesus said, "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth will draw all men unto me" John 12:32.
Think about it. This is our part in the great controversy. Whatever others may be doing, we must lift the cross, higher and still higher! "What the world needs is Jesus--just a glimpse of Him."
"Hanging upon the cross, Christ was the gospel. Now we have a message, 'Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world.' Will not our church members keep their eyes on a crucified and risen Saviour, in whom their hopes of eternal life are centered? This is our message, our argument, our doctrine, our warning to the impenitent, our encouragement for the sorrowing, the hope for every believer. If we can awaken an interest in men's minds that will cause them to fix their eyes on Christ, we may step aside, and ask them only to continue to fix their eyes upon the Lamb of God. They thus receive their lesson. 'Whosoever will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.' He whose eyes are fixed on Jesus will leave all. He will die to selfishness. He will believe in all the Word of God, which is so gloriously and wonderfully exalted in Christ.,
"As the sinner sees Jesus as He is, an all-compassionate Saviour, hope and assurance take possession of his soul. The helpless soul is cast without any reservation upon Jesus. None can bear away from the vision of Christ Jesus crucified a lingering doubt. Unbelief is gone" (Bible Commentary, vol. 6, p. 1113).
"The sacrifice of Christ as an atonement for sin is the great truth around which all other truths cluster. In order to be rightly understood and appreciated, every truth in the Word of God, from Genesis to Revelation, must be studied in the light that streams from the cross of Calvary. I present before you the great, grand monument of mercy and regeneration, salvation and redemption--the Son of God uplifted on the cross. This is to be the foundation of every discourse given by our ministers" (Gospel Workers, p. 315).
Don't miss this! Do not allow the sworn adversary of truth and righteousness, working through humans, to interpret the character of God for you. The cross is about God. Salvation is about God. Sacrifice is about God. The plan of redemption is about God. Can you visualize the gospel as a portrayal of God? Can you see the central theme of the great controversy to be the unveiling of the true character of God? Yes, God's people are "destroyed for lack of knowledge" (Hosea 4:6) The day is rapidly approaching when "the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea" (Habakkuk 2:14). God's glory is His character. (see Exodus 33:18, 19; 34:6, 7; Christ's Object Lessons, p. 414).
To know God as He is, provides us with the truth we need for salvation (see John 17:3). The end is here.
"And the years of eternity, as they roll, will bring richer and still more glorious revelations of God and of Christ. As knowledge is progressive, so will love, reverence, and happiness increase. The more men learn of God, the greater will be their admiration of His character. . .
"The great controversy is ended. Sin and sinners are no more. The entire universe is clean. One pulse of harmony and gladness beats through the vast creation. From Him who created all, flow life and light and gladness, throughout the realms of illimitable space. From the minutest atom to the greatest world, all things, animate and inanimate, in their unshadowed beauty, declare that God is love" (Great Controversy, p. 678).

Internet Update
The project is still alive!
Greetings! Several months have passed since my last communique, and there is much to share, all good, for we have God's promise, "All things work together for good!" (Romans 8:28). Thus we may rejoice in "all things" and "In everything give thanks."
To update you on the Internet project, we have had numerous blessings and some major challenges. First, the blessings.
All of us, it seems have areas of our lives that we have trouble getting together, and I am no exception. I have had trouble stabilizing my life, and when this project began I had no home of my own but was living and working in other peoples' homes. Miraculously, since last I contacted you, God has provided a place of my own. It is a small mobile home that just fits me and my belongings. The price was reasonable, rent-to-own. Thus I now have my desk and computer set up and am personally online. What a difference it makes!
I can testify to having a "zeal . . . but not according to knowledge," regarding things Internet. Getting online and having hands-on experience let me know how little I knew when this project began and how much I still need to learn. I have an uncompromising conviction that this strategy is right, but how very difficult it is when one has to rely on other peoples' knowledge. Hopefully, that will become less necessary as time goes by.
We have hit some vexatious hurdles but have hope that the most difficult is nearing solution. We were (and have been for some time) poised to commence our advertising when, due to circumstances, the decision was reached that I would be responsible for receiving and processing orders and the publisher would drop-shop only. The problem? I work 36-48 hours a week. Taking and processing orders on a volunteer basis would take time I don't have. Therefore, we have been seeking a fulfillment center which would be willing to take and process orders and send the orders on to the publisher to drop ship. This is the only arrangement that would work for us.
In order to facilitate international sales, we need to be able to take orders with a credit card. The difficulty arises due to the fact that merchant credit card accounts require that businesses using them have the merchandise on-hand (rather than drop shipping from another business). If anyone out there has knowledge that would help us, please e-mail and educate me.
However, we have a couple of possible solutions. One is to run orders through Barnes & Noble. The down-side is that this would create a lag time of up to eight weeks for orders to be received by the customer. Amazon.com would take the books and get them out promptly, but we would have to first ship them to Amazon.com, an approach which has its own down-side.
We do have other possibilities we are exploring at the present time. I cannot give too many details, but please keep it in prayer. We need an arrangement that would enable us to run properly without danger of becoming thoroughly deranged, which could happen if I were personally to attempt this responsibility.
Again, your prayers for this project are essential.
Prayer
Words cannot convey how much we appreciate your prayers for this project. Prophecy says the last message to go to the world is the message of God's character of love. The intervention of God in response to the prayer of faith alone can take this message forward. Please keep praying. And remember these wonderful words of inspiration:
'Verily, verily I say unto you,' Christ continued, 'He that believeth on Me, the works that I do shall he do also.' The Saviour was deeply anxious for His disciples to understand for what purpose His divinity was united to humanity. He came to the world to display the glory [character] of God, that man might be uplifted by its restoring power. God was manifested in Him that He might be manifested in them. Jesus revealed no qualities and exercised no powers that men may not have through faith in Him. His perfect humanity is that which all His followers may possess, if they will be in subjection to God as He was.
'And greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto My Father.' By this Christ did not mean that the disciples' work would be of a more exalted character than His, but that it would have greater extent. He did not refer merely to miracle working, but to all that would take place under the working of the Holy Spirit.
After the Lord's ascension, the disciples realized the fulfillment of His promise. The scenes of the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension of Christ were a living reality to them. They saw that the prophecies had been literally fulfilled. They searched the Scriptures, and accepted their teaching with a faith and assurance unknown before. They knew that the divine Teacher was all that He had claimed to be. As they told their experience, and exalted the love of God, men's hearts were melted and subdued, and multitudes believed on Jesus.
The Saviour's promise to His disciples is a promise to His church to the end of time. God did not design that His wonderful plan to redeem men should achieve only insignificant results. . . .
As yet the disciples were unacquainted with the Saviour's unlimited resources and power. He said to them, 'Hitherto have ye asked nothing in My name' John 16:24. He explained that the secret of their success would be in asking for strength and grace in His name. He would be present before the Father to make request for them. The prayer of the humble suppliant He presented as His own desire in that soul's behalf. Every sincere prayer is heard in heaven. It may not be fluently expressed but if the heart is in it, it will ascend to the sanctuary where Jesus ministers, and He will present it to the Father without one awkward, stammering word, beautiful and fragrant with the incense of His own perfection.
The path of sincerity and integrity is not a path free from obstruction but in every difficulty we are to see a call to prayer. There is no one living who has any power that he has not received from God, and the source whence it comes is open to the weakest human being. 'Whatsoever ye shall ask in My name,' said Jesus, 'that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask anything in My name, I will do it.'
Desire of Ages, p. 667
Unity
"I do not pray for these alone but also for those who will believe in Me through their word, that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me . . . I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me" (John 17:20-23).
For some time I have felt burdened regarding the theological centrifuge confronting us as a church. Friends of many years standing change theology and suddenly the relationship is not the same. Some of us can remember back to the time when we all believed alike. How comfortable we were back then.
Jesus prayed that we might be one--one with Him, one with each other. It seems to me we have let theology come between us when it shouldn't have and didn't have to. We all know the importance of accurate doctrine. How can we attain unity without sacrificing truth? Any comments?
Here are some quotations that surfaced recently in my reading:
When we are united in the unity for which Christ prayed, this long controversy that has been kept up through Satanic agency will end" (EGW 1888 Materials, p. 955; a powerful statement!).
Those who sincerely desire truth will not be reluctant to lay open their positions for investigation and criticism and will not be annoyed if their opinions and ideas are crossed. This was the spirit cherished among us forty years ago. We would come together burdened in soul, praying that we might be one in faith and doctrine; for we knew that Christ is not divided. One point at a time was made the subject of investigation. Solemnity characterized these councils of investigation. The Scriptures were opened with a sense of awe. Often we fasted that we might be better fitted to understand the truth. After earnest prayer, if any point was not understood, it was discussed, and each one expressed his opinion freely. Then we would again bow in prayer, and earnest supplications went up to heaven that God would help us to see eye to eye, that we might be one, as Christ and the Father are one (Ibid., p. 991).
Where so much importance is attached to the unity of believers, why is there so little effort to preserve unity (Ibid, p. 1005).
His transforming grace upon human hearts will lead to unity that has not yet been realized for all who are assimilated to Christ will be in harmony with one another. The Holy Spirit will create unity (Ibid., p. 1017).
When the people of God are one with Him, they will be one with each other. Their unity and love will testify to the genuineness of their union with Christ (Ibid., p. 1046).
[Satan] misrepresented the character of God and placed in a false light his gracious commandments. He evaded the truth, and subtly worked to make good appear as evil, and evil as good. He has lost none of his tact, and through his agents manifests the same diplomacy and skill in evading truth, in creating false issues, in misrepresenting the message and the messenger. Not only do we see his working in the world among those who openly oppose the truth, but also in the church his art is manifested in the divisions and controversies among those who profess to be the children of God.
Whenever the Lord has a special work to do among His people, when He would arouse their minds to contemplate vital truth, Satan will work to divert the mind by introducing minor points of difference. . . . If Satan can draw the mind away to some unimportant issue and cause the people to divide on some minor point, so that their hearts are barricaded against light and truth, he exults in malicious triumph (Ibid., p. 1062).
With these impressive statements before us, shouldn't we begin the process of promoting unity based on truth, rather than allowing the enemy to continue dividing us? What can we do to facilitate this?? Let me hear from you. Contact the author
Obedience
We had a suggestion that we might review some inspired statements regarding the goal of obedience. How obedient does God intend to make us?: Are there levels of obedience? Or is obedience like "round", either we are or we're not?
This is the will of God, your sanctification (1 Thess 4:3)
To Him who is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy (Jude 24)
Beloved, now we are children of God'; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifieth himself, just as He is pure (1 John 3:2, 3)
Whoever abides in Him does not sin (1 John 3:6).
Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, 'I know Him' and does not keep His commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we now that we are in Him (1 John 2:3-5).
If you love me, keep my commandments (John 14:15
If you keep my commandments, you will abide in My love, just I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love (John 15:10).
Q's & A's
Some of the questions I get may be of general interest. Therefore, I shall attempt to answer some in this forum. Here is a recent one.
Question: What is your connection with Fred Wright? Why are you promoting his book, Behold Your God? He has been discredited.
Answer: I did not know the late Fred Wright. I never met him nor communicated with him. I did not know he existed until after discovering the message of God's character of love (COG) in Scripture and Spirit of Prophecy. His book, Behold Your God, which I knew nothing about until after discovering the message in the inspired word, contains this, God's last message to the world.
God never removes our free will. That Balaam, a prophet of God, could try to curse Israel, reminds us the sin option is always open. Perhaps we should all take heed lest we fall.
Keep in mind what Spirit of Prophecy says regarding the 1888 messengers: "It is quite possible that Elder Jones or [Elder] Waggoner may be overthrown by the temptations of the enemy; but if they should be, this would not prove they had no message from God, or that the work they had done was all a mistake. But should this happen, how many would take this position, and enter into a fatal delusion because they are not under the control of the Spirit of God" (MR 1152-6; emphasis supplied).
I don't think God would choose to use an individual who was actively engaged in sin. However, in the plan of God no one ever gives up his/her free will, not even those who may be used in a very special way. Satan takes advantage of our freedom by exercising his considerable powers to bring God's messengers into sin. What a coupe this is for him. Sin is a terrible, terrible thing. By endorsing Behold Your God, I hope all realize I am not endorsing sin in any form. Let us be followers of Christ, not of any human, and receive His messages from His word. Then, whatever humans may do, we will follow truth.
Let us be mature enough as Christians to focus on the message of Behold Your God and leave the messenger in the Lord's hands.
Worth Thinking About
Have you wondered . . .
when Christ became Man, whether you would have been among those who received Him or among those who rejected Him? Inspiration says . . .
Many say, 'If I had only lived in the days of Christ I would not have wrested His words, or falsely interpreted His instruction. I would not have rejected and crucified Him as did the Jews", but that will be proved by the way in which you deal with His message and His messengers today.

The Mystery of Salvation by The Doctrine Commission of the Church of England
Those of us who lament the onward march of error and its accompanying disorder in our world now have cause to cheer! A recent book attests that God has many who have not bowed the knee to Baal.
The Mystery of Salvation manifests the kind of imperfections one would expect from a work produced by a committee of mere humans. Obviously, some differences with our theology exist, though surprisingly slight (the most prominent being a belief in evolutionary beginnings). The style of writing varies throughout--some clear as crystal, some ponderous and scholarly. What a joy to recognize the hand of the invisible God working through the arm of flesh.
Transcending all unevenness of style and the expected (though slight) theological dissonance, is the fact that in the publication of this book the Church of England has courageously taken a stand for conditional human immortality, without overcorrecting into universalism. Hell is of limited duration, they say.
This, I believe, is an historic work which many of you will want for your library.
